39 Things About Me

Stolen unashamedly from exactscience:

The 39 steps

  1. Name: Ruth, technically actually Judith Ruth on the birth certificate but it’s just Ruth. My parents have an odd thing about giving all of us 2 names and always using the middle one!
  2. Birthplace: St. Thomas’ Hospital, London
  3. And now: South Kensington, London
  4. Eyes: Bluey, greeney, grey colour, it depends on what I am wearing
  5. Hair: Ginger and very, very curly. Thank God for straighteners
  6. Likes: Diet Coke, decent coffee, having very long chats with friends about nothing much in particular, scuba diving, all things to do with viruses/microbiology/biochemistry/immunology, lazy Sunday mornings, feeling contented, listening to music, singing/playing instruments, going for long walks with no destination in mind
  7. Dislikes: Sweetcorn, cucumber and tomato being put in food randomly (especially in sandwiches), hollow fake people who pretend to be your friend but then just stab you in the back, time constraints, being co-erced into doing things you don’t want to do by being put on a guilt trip, people who use their power and authority for all the wrong reasons, scare stories in the media
  8. Hobbies: Scuba diving, hockey, music, taking reasonably average photos, walking for miles on my own, travelling around new cities, travelling in general, dedicating time to myself to do nothing
  9. Pets: A lovely ginger cat called George
  10. Pet peeves: People who ring you with a private number and don’t leave a voicemail message, people who take books off a shelf and then don’t put them back, a lack of punctuation in sentences (or an overuse – particularly the scurge of the flying apostrophes)
  11. Fave sweet: Toss up between Cherry Drops and Chocolate Eclairs (but only Cadbury’s)
  12. Fave book: Catcher In The Rye, or To Kill A Mockingbird
  13. Fave authors: Any of the 20th Century American authors –  Salinger, Plath, Alice Walker, Harper Lee, Scott Fitzgerald
  14. Fave movie: Amélie, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, About A Boy, Bell Book & Candle
  15. Fave bands: Thea Gilmore, Nerina Pallot, The Pogues, Amy Winehouse, Kate Rusby
  16. Fave song: America – Simon & Garfunkel
  17. Fave song to be with friends with: Anything by Queen which you can jump up and down to
  18. Fave song to go to sleep to: Underneath the Stars – Kate Rusby
  19. Fave month: June
  20. Fave day: Thursday, as an add on I hate Tuesdays
  21. Fave colour: Red, turquoise, depends on my mood
  22. Fave hot beverage: Coffee (always latte or cappuccino), fruit tea
  23. Fave beverage: Diet Coke, Gin & Cranberry, nice glass of dry white wine
  24. Turn ons: Intellect, witty sarcasm, dark hair, blue eyes
  25. Turn offs: Arrogance, being short (as I’m only 5′3″ I want someone with a bit of height behind them)
  26. I love my sister dearly but all the things that annoy me about her I can see in myself
  27. After over 23 years I am still seeking love, affection, acknowledgment and acceptance from my Father. I know it won’t ever happen, but I keep trying
  28. Many of my deepest, darkest secrets aren’t actually that scary or shocking as some of the things that people know about me
  29. Internally my body is cracking up, I have ankylosing spondylitis, possible osteoarthritis, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Hypermobility Type (joint hypermobility) and a malignant tumour in my left tibia that I’m undergoing chemotherapy for. I try not to whinge about my physical health to people though
  30. I believe my parents did the best they could for me in terms of ym upbringing, I went to a good school, a good university and have good qualifications and a pleasant manner, I just don’t think they realised that the social skills are such a necessity
  31. Newcastle is my spiritual home, despite knowing that I am a Londoner through and through I would give anything to be a proper humourous, self-deprecating, friendy Geordie
  32. My Mum has had the most influence on my musical taste - it’s her fault that I am a jazz/folk addict
  33. Everybody says I resemble my Father in looks but I think I look very like my Mum, it’s just my Dad has pale hair that people see the similarities
  34. Despite university being quite fraught I loved my time there, and I would give anything to do it all over again and do the things I wished I had done the first time round
  35. I have three favourite places to sit and think; on Tynemouth Beach looking at the sea preferably on a late summer’s evening, sitting on the banks of the Thames near South Bank drinking a take out coffee and watching the sun set over Durham Cathedral
  36. I have lost count of the number of times I have fallen over. I think I am dyspraxic but prefer to just admit to severe clumsiness
  37. I love being an absolute tease in more ways than one and think everyone should have a good harmless flirt at least once
  38. I have never had a totally acrimonious break up, I think life is too short
  39. On the whole I try to be optimistic, it just doesn’t always work
